CHAPTER TEN
ALL EYES WERE on the bride. Susan emerged from beneath the canopy of plastic flowers at the far end of the room.
I thought she looked amazing for a bride of any age. A myriad of pearly white buttons sparkled and twinkled from every curve of her gown as she started down the aisle. The assembled guests must have agreed, judging by their collective âoohsâ and âaahsâ as she passed.
When she reached the front of the room, Victor was waiting for her with his cool smile. I couldnât tell if he was delighted or amusedâthe curve of his lip was as indecipherable now as it had been when Iâd met him.
He clasped her plump pink hands in his own dark fingers and they turned to face the waiting vicar.
âDearly belovedâ¦â
I tried to pay attention to the ceremony, but my stomach was yelling at me for missing breakfast. How long do these things take, anyway? Too bad I didnât have my usual handbag with me. There was always a cookie or something in there for emergencies.
I was pulled from my thoughts by a jab to the ribs.
âJess, do you still have the ring!?â my mother hissed in my ear as she dug her bony elbow into my side.
Eyes all around us were turning to meet mine as I fought down my rising embarrassment. While I was tuned into my own little world, apparently the priest had asked the couple to provide the rings. He was ready to officiate their bond, only to find that I was still holding onto one band for safe-keeping.
Face a darker red than the reception wine, I fumbled the little black box from my purse and looked at Susan. She was staring at me pleadingly, and without thinking, I tossed the ring box to her through the air. Her eyes widened, and I realized she wouldnât even try to catch it.
But Victor stepped in. He reached out one slim hand to pluck the flying container from the air, and the crowd gave a small cheer sprinkled with laughter. Victor smiled easily as he opened the box and removed one shiny gold circle. When he placed it on Susanâs finger, the deed was done.
âI now pronounce you man and wife.â The guests erupted with applause as the vicar finished, and Susan and Victor were officially married. Everyone was thoroughly cheerful about it. Everyone but my uncle Rick, that is. He sat on the other side of my mother, his handkerchief soaking wet with tears. He was such an old softy.
The ceremony really had been pleasant, and I had enjoyed the moment of bliss with everyone else. I couldnât wait for the receptionâand whatever Joe had prepared for lunch.
